Richmond top

The city of Richmond is a gorgeous coastal city located within the Lower Mainland of BC. The community is considered to be part of Metro Vancouver. Richmond is bordered by the cities of Burnaby and Vancouver to the north, New Westminster to the east and Delta to the south. The Strait of Georgia forms Richmond's western border.

The city of Richmond is home to the Vancouver International Airport. The airport is situated on Sea Island. Richmond city is made up of nearly all of the islands in the Fraser River delta. Lulu Island is the biggest and most populated island. Sea Island, home of Vancouver International Airport is actually the 2nd biggest island. Furthermore, there are 13 smaller islands that make up Richmond's 129.66 square kilometers of land area. Steveston's quaint fishing village is likewise included in the city and it is located in Richmond's far southwest corner. The Richmond Olympic Oval was made nearby and was amongst the place for speed-skating events in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Due to the fact that all of Richmond's land area occupies islands in a river delta, the city is full of rich and alluvial soil perfect for agriculture. In fact, the area was one of the very first places in B.C. to be farmed during 19th century by individuals from Europe.

The geographic location of Richmond brings with it several issues. Because all of the land averages just one meter above sea level, it is prone to flooding, specially in high tide. In order to deal with this condition, all of the major islands are currently surrounded by a system of dykes. These dykes serve to protect Richmond city from expected flooding, although, they are not as big as those found in the Netherlands or the New Orleans levees. If there ever is a large earthquake within the vicinity, there is a possibility that the dykes could break. This would cause the alluvial soil to potentially soften that would cause extensive damage.

Richmond city is likewise at risk of experiencing a major flood if the Fraser River has an unusually high spring freshet. There are different recreation trails and bird sanctuaries which run along the tops of many of the dykes. These wide, flat dirt roads make perfect places for joggers, families to walk together with strollers and young kids as well as the perfect place for people who walk their dogs. The city of Richmond supports around 1400 acres of parkland.

The city supports about 100,000 jobs in a variety of fields comprising tourism, retail, airport services and aviation, fishing, light manufacturing, government and agriculture. Richmond city is likewise a leading place within the region for high-technology companies. These firms comprise MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates and the Nintendo Corporation of Canada.
